Understanding Tax Credits is difficult enough for advice workers, but it’s even harder for those receiving tax credits. Someone who accessed our support service fell foul of HMRC when they claimed she had been overpaid in both 2016–17 and in 2017–118. For 2016–17 they wanted over £8000 repaying, and for the current tax year over £1000. Her partner is disabled and unable to work, and so they are reliant on benefits.
We challenged the decision of the HMRC and we have since heard that they will not be pursuing the over £8000 they wanted repaying for 2016–17. They have also reduced the amount they want repaying for the current tax year from over £1000 to just over £700. We are happy with the HMRC decision for the 2016–17, and the case is ongoing.
